How to Use Dual Coding When You Study

Pair one sentence with a simple picture of the same idea. The study step is redrawing that picture from memory, not coloring a page of notes.

Direct answer: Write the relationship in one sentence, draw it with a few boxes and arrows, then close the notes and redraw it. Open the source only to fix the link you missed.

What is dual coding?

Dual coding is Allan Paivio’s idea that people can store an idea as words and as an image. Clark and Paivio reviewed the theory for education: a picture helps when it carries the same structure as the words, so you have two ways to retrieve the idea. A sticker in the margin that does not show the structure is not dual coding.

How is this different from a mind map you only look at?

A mind map can combine verbal and visual representations. Looking at that map again is rereading; reproducing it without the original adds retrieval practice, the same move as answering a question from memory.

The six-step dual coding workflow

  1. Pick one relationship. One process, comparison, or cause. Not a whole chapter.
  2. Write one sentence. “Light reactions make ATP and NADPH, and the Calvin cycle uses them to build sugar.”
  3. Draw a simple picture. Two boxes and an arrow. Label the arrow with what moves. Skip color unless color is the fact.
  4. Hide both. Close the sentence and the drawing.
  5. Redraw from memory. Sketch the boxes and say the sentence. If you cannot place the arrow, you do not have the idea yet.
  6. Check the missing link. Open the source, fix that one link, hide it again, and redraw once more.

What does one sketch look like?

Sentence: Light reactions produce ATP and NADPH. The Calvin cycle spends them to make sugar.

Picture: a box labeled light reactions, an arrow labeled ATP and NADPH, a box labeled Calvin cycle, and the word sugar leaving that box.

Redraw, notes closed: if the arrow has no label, that is the miss to check.

What mistakes turn the picture into decoration?

  • Copying a textbook diagram you cannot redraw.
  • Adding colors and icons that are not part of the idea.
  • Drawing the whole chapter on one page, so no single relationship is testable.
  • Looking at the picture later instead of redrawing it.

How can an app keep the pair?

Store the sentence as a question in Feynman AI and keep the sketch as the check you redraw. A short redraw fits a 25-minute Pomodoro or the study session planner.

Frequently asked questions

What is dual coding?

Dual coding, from Allan Paivio, represents an idea using both words and images. Redrawing the picture from memory adds retrieval practice to that pair.

Is a mind map dual coding?

A mind map can support dual coding when it combines words with meaningful visual relationships. Redrawing it with the notes closed adds retrieval practice.

When does a picture not help?

A picture that repeats the sentence without adding a structure, or a picture you only look at, does not give you a second way to retrieve the idea.

Can you dual code a definition?

Yes, if the definition has parts or a process. Draw those parts. A word with no structure does not need a picture.
